Diorama Production

We created a 15 second animation with the theme of choice. We chose to create a farm life animation, with farmers living their daily lives, featuring chickens and a cow. To create this diorama we used the adobe software after effects, mainly used for 2D animations and non live action content.

Design Rational

Storyboard

The storyboard does not go into too much detail on farmers lives. Since this is a 15 second animation, the storyline is very short. The farmers exit their house, tend the cow and chickens, and then take the goods and make money at the farm stand. Certain elements in the sketches didn’t make it to the final video.

Animation

One key component when animating vector file characters is moving the origin or pin point where each body part meets with another. Here, the chicken’s wing origin is moved to the left, in real life this is where the chickens wings move. Same with its head. The point is moved near the neck to give the illusion of the head or limbs being connected properly.

The wing and head is being animated by keyframes. Above shows different types of key framable elements. Those keyframes is what makes the characters move.

Final Animation

Reflection

This animation was really fun to create. It took a lot of finesse with key frames, but despite the limit of time, it key framed out perfectly leaving no seconds behind. We enjoyed animating something that looked like it came from adobe illustrator, which is where the assets are from.
