Cover Magazine Project
The goal was to create a 3D Rendering of a conceptual illustration using a real news headline article. The software used to render the concept was Cinema 4D. This news source can be obtained through any new source. I close a headline from USA Today called “18 states now have measles cases, Is your state one of them?”. Here is how I developed this Cover.
Design Rational
I first sketched a map of the united states, drawing out the affected states and wrote down how many measles cases were in each state. The idea I thought of was to 3D model the United States and extrude the states like a column chart.

Rough Composite

For my cover, I went with Time magazine, since it’s the only magazine company I know. For the color of the united states, I used red and a peach color to represent the measles keeping it in an appropriate (not gross looking) level.
Renders
Render #1
While modeling, we thought of the idea of adding little virus’s on top of the most affected states. The states with the most cases are Texas with 309, New Mexico with 42, Kansas with 9, California with 6, and both Georgia and New Jersey with 3. The other states with the measles texture were part of the 18 states, but were with less than 3 cases. Alaska and Rhode Island were listed on the article, but did not specify a case number, so they did not make it to the modeling.

Render #2
In the second render, we decided to add an outline to each state, making it easier to identify. During this stage, we also tweaked around with the different lighting.
Final Render
In the final render, we added an outline to the other states that are not part of the 18 states with measles cases. This outline represents which exact states are not associated with measles cases in the concept design.
